I was ready a bit older book that focuses more on Power Pivot/Power Query in Excel. It said it was quite a bit more efficient to create a custom column in Power Query, than to create a calculated column in Power Query (i.e. the table view in Power BI). Is that still the case? Thanks!

Select the check box for Select multiple items . Once Power Query came on the scene, I was able to do far more data modeling in Excel, and do it both faster and with less hassle. I still use Access when I need to store data, but I no longer put Access between Excel and larger data sources like SQL Server. And when I have the data like I want it, then I reach for Power Pivot to start reporting. Access is a great small size data warehouse (<2GB) & query tool, but if all you're doing is Pivot Table type analysis off of large data sets then PowerPivot makes it pretty much obsolete. And don't forget that PowerPivot is built on SQL Server anyway, and you do have relational abilities, which is one of the coolest things about it.
